Eanes 12 - K Philosophy of Vertical Alignment EISD’s curriculum is aligned grade by grade with the goal of our students’ achieving success in college and beyond, rather than just high school graduation. EISD provides an outstanding education to its students through a top-down approach and vertical alignment of the educational experience. While most districts design curricula beginning at Kindergarten and progressing to 12th grade, EISD focuses on the desired end result: a well-rounded, highly educated, highly desired college candidate who is prepared for the rigors of the most demanding colleges in the world. The programs at the high school are designed to open any door for a Westlake graduate. The set of courses for Hill Country and West Ridge Middle Schools are designed to produce fully prepared high school freshmen. Similarly, the elementary school curriculum is designed to produce fully prepared sixth-graders entering middle school. EISD offers a myriad of opportunities in academics, the arts, athletics, and virtually any other passion that a student wishes to pursue. The College Board-sponsored Advanced Placement (AP) program offers 40 college level courses that high schools can adopt. Westlake High School offers coursework that prepares students for national assessments in 31 specific AP courses, placing the Westlake program among the broadest of all public or private school in central Texas. Fourty percent of Eanes students are enrolled in one or more advanced classes year to year. Further, 80% of AP Exams taken by students have earned a passing score of 3 or more. AP and pre-AP courses are open to any Westlake student. The success of so many Westlake students in these advanced courses is made possible by a planned continuum of challenging courses from 12th grade extending to second grade: Westlake High School offers “pre-AP” classes in the disciplines of Math, English, Social Studies, Science and Foreign Languages; our two middle schools offer advanced classes in Math, English, and Foreign Languages; and our six elementary schools offer advanced classes in Math and English to meet the needs of advanced students. The gifted and talented (GT) program provides extended enrichment beyond that which is already a part of the regular classroom experience for those students who exhibit high academic ability and creative problem solving ability. Unlike many other school districts, which provide GT services in the regular classroom, EISD employs dedicated GT teachers who specialize in challenging these students. More specific information can be found at Read more... Children benefit most when any barriers to learning are identified and overcome as early, quickly and thoroughly as possible. Therefore, Eanes kindergarten through second grade teachers are specially trained to recognize learning differences in a child that may diminish the child’s ability to thrive in the classroom. In the Early Intervention Program, teachers work with learning specialists to provide the necessary support to close the achievement gap between a struggling learner and his or her grade-level peers. Also, at middle school or high school, if a student needs extra time or support to master a particular topic, his or her teacher can call upon the resources of the Content Mastery Program. This program provides instructional reinforcement and alternative learning strategies and opportunities to take tests in a quiet environment to enable students to master the regular curriculum. Back to Top The goal of the Eanes curriculum is to challenge every student. If a child is determined to be eligible for special education services, a team of Eanes specialists use or develop high-quality systems of support for the child and also coordinate services for the parents, including parent workshops and individual consultations. Students receive services in the least restrictive environment with an emphasis on access to the general education curriculum. A committee of professionals is responsible for meeting annually with parents to discuss the child’s ongoing development and the attainment of specific goals, ensuring that each child benefits from these educational interventions. Back to Top Guidance Child Care and Preschool Program The Eanes Child Development Center offers child care and preschool services for children ages six weeks to five years. The caring professionals who staff the Center undergo regular staff development training. The Center maintains a waiting list for those families interested in its excellent services. Read more... At EASY Care, K-5 students enjoy supervised playtime on the playground, snack time, arts and crafts, homework time, and other age-appropriate activities. Read more... Academic success and strong extracurricular programs are an important part of the high school experience, but they would be incomplete without a community focus. Eanes students are encouraged to contribute significantly to the community, learning to see beyond their personal needs to the good of the community as a whole. Read more... The EISD Community Education Program is dedicated to providing quality education to all members of the community, regardless of age. The diverse offerings run the gamut from academia to entertainment; from hobbies to life skills. The Community Education Program enhances the return on the tax investment made in EISD, maximizing the buildings and other physical assets, paid for with public funds, in service to everyone. Read more... Two-thirds of Westlake High School Students are involved in extracurricular activities and have achieved extraordinary success at local, state and even national levels. Extracurricular activities abound at the middle and high school levels, and are a central pillar of the Eanes community. Traditional sports and fine arts activities are strongly represented. Because of the number of students involved, many less traditional activities are available. Even many elementary schools have leadership activities such as Student Council.
